| Hoped for Human Chain around the
Millpond Sunday 18th May 2003. The attempt to make a circle of 'loose change' around the millpond to raise money for St James' Church interior restoration fund started 12 noon and continued until the coins were collected up towards 3 o' clock. Luckily the rain held off though there was a strong wind blowing, sufficiently unpleasant to deter others that might have turned up for this event. Come 3 o' clock when the attempt to form a human chain was to begin it did start raining. The ambition to circle the millpond was scaled down to the Promenade between the sailing clubs. Even that though was abandoned as the weather turned worse. A prize of a meal for two was promised to the group who collected most, as was announced from the table placed by the mill, map flapping in the oncoming wind. The widest gap in the line appeared from the corner of the carpark, across the quay, and around to the first bend in the promenade. Other ends just feet away from each other encouraged more giving. Some streaching was noticed. Total value raised by the line of coins around the Millpond was £1,209. |
